Let’s Talk About…Digital Ownership

Episode 8

In the latest episode of Let’s Talk About… the boys discussed the ever changing landscape of movie ownership, asking the inevitable question: Is the tide turning on digial ownsership?

This all came about when this week Sony announced they would be removing over 550 movies from people’s Playstation Network (PSN) accounts after a licensing agreement with Studio Canal came to an end. Its no small catalogue either, as Studio Canal have everything from Apocalypse Now: Directors Cut, all the way through to Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy, so if you had a decent collection built up over the years, there is no doubt that you would feel some impact from this.

Naturally, the boys love a good DVD, and have amassed movies both physically and digitally over the years, so with a story this close to our hearts hitting the headlines this week, we thought we would grab a brew and have a chat about it.

Things we cover in this weeks episode:

  • The situation over at Sony and why the films are being removed

  • What does this mean for digital ownership after a deletion of this scale?

  • Given how we consumer movies now, does the debate over physical or digital ownership even matter anymore?
